Stadium – played back / diffused at dotolim, Seoul, October, 31st, 2015

For my solo presentation/performance at dotolim, I presented and diffused a selection of football crowd recordings played through a 6 channel sound system, consisting of various speakers and transducers strategically placed throughout the venue.

The recordings I played were part of my ongoing project that charts the trajectory of a crowd’s cheering in concentric circles from the innermost ring of the MCG stadium, Melbourne to the outermost ring of its surrounding suburbs – observing how each material and spatial location re-frames and re-contextualises the emotional and psychological resonance of a crowd’s aural projections.

In looking back at the performance, I found that my placement of transducers on various resonant objects (drum kit | metal door | plaster roof) wasn’t so strong and slightly confused the recordings, but the placement of a speaker in the toilet with the door closed proved to be a fantastic extension of the work – it really seemed to add another dimension to the recording and brought the receding situation of the MCG into the performance space.
