윌 거스리는 호주 출신의 드럼/타악기 연주자로 즉흥연주, 작곡, 공연 등을 통해 다양한 음악활동을 하고 있다. 그는 여러가지 연주 스타일과 방법을 그 한계까지 밀고 나가 독창적인 타악기 연주방식을 만들어냈다. 그는 재즈와 즉흥음악을 호주 멜버른의 빅토리아대학에서 공부를 하였으며, Ren Walter와 ‘Improvise Tuesdays’라는 공연을 매주 기획하였다. 그 공연은 현재 호주에서 가장 긴 역사를 갖고 있는 즉흥/실험 음악 공연장인 ‘Make It Up Club’으로 명맥을 유지하고 있다. 프랑스 낭뜨에서 그는 ‘CABLE#’이라는 단체에서 활동하며 정기적으로 공연과 페스티벌을 주최하고, 즉흥/실험 음악을 다루는 ‘ANTBOY MUSIC’이라는 음반 레이블을 운영하고 있다. 솔로 연주 이외에도, 미니멀/맥시멀 프리 재즈 트리오인 ‘THE AMES ROOM’과 변종된 애팔래치아 포크 듀오 ‘ELWOOD & GUTHRIE’, 그리고 일렉트로/어큐스틱 즉흥/작곡 앙상블인 ‘THYMOLPHTHALEIN’ 에서도 활동하고 있다. 오랫동안 전자장비와 증폭을 통한 연주를 해왔지만, 그의 최근 솔로 작업에서는 어쿠스틱 드럼셋 연주로 돌아왔다. 그의 솔로 음반인 ‘Sticks, Stones & Breaking Bones’은 진동, 리듬, 반복 그리고 큰 음량의 물리성과 밀도를 활용한 작품이다. 같이 작업하거나 연주했던 음악가로는 Jean-Luc Guionnet, Jérôme Noetinger, Anthony Pateras, Keith Rowe, Rhys Chatham, Erell Latimier, Matthew Earle, Adam Sussmann, Clayton Thomas, Ferran Fages, Jean-Philippe Gross, Greg Kingston, Helmut Schafer, Keith Rowe, Ren Walters, Mark Simmonds 등이 있다. http://www.will-guthrie.com/
Will Guthrie is an Australian drummer/percussionist. He works in many different settings of music: live performance, improvisation and studio composition. His music pushes the borders of numerous styles and methods, creating a truly unique and inclassable approach to percussion.He studied jazz and improvised music(s) at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia and alongside Ren Walters he started the weekly concert series ‘Improvised Tuesdays’, now known as the Make It Up Club and is Australia’s longest running performance space dedicated to experimental and improvised musics. In Nantes, France he is part of the collective CABLE# which also organizes regular concerts and an annual festival. He also runs the experimental improvised CD label and mail-order service; ANTBOY MUSIC.He plays solo, and in minimalist/maximalist free jazz trio THE AMES ROOM, in appalachian mutant folk duo ELWOOD & GUTHRIE, as well as the electro/acoustic improvised/composed ensemble THYMOLPHTHALEIN.After many years of using amplification and electronics his recent solo work is a return to the acoustic drum set.
