‘Handmade / Automation’

눈에 보이지 않는 스코어를 지휘할 수 있게 주문 제작한 소리 지휘봉 ’Sonic Baton’을 활용한 퍼포먼스. 소리의 근원은 서울의 세라믹 예술가 스튜디오에서 발췌한 현지 녹음과 영국 스토크온트렌트의 세라믹 자동생산설비를 녹음하여 결합한 것이다. 이 공연은 ‘Made in Korea’ 프로젝트의 한 파트로서 세라미스트 Kay Aplin과 함께 공동 기획하였던 British Ceramic Biennial 2017에서 선보인 4채널 설치작품을 각색한 작업이기도 하다. 예술가로서는 Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Whitechapel Gallery, Jerwood Hastings, Seoul Museum of Art, Conflux NYC and Berlin MPA에서 전시/공연하였고, 그의 음악은 BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, Public Record, Furthernoise, Radio Papesse and Resonance FM 등에서 소개된 바 있다. 그의 스테레오 사운드 작업 ‘The Missing Paintings’는 Towner Art Gallery(UK)의 영구 소장품으로 선정되기도 하였다. 2007년에는 미래주의 음악가 루이지 루솔로의 영향을 받은 신-미래주의 집단을 형성하여 루솔로의 작품 ’Awakening of a City’ 중 성공적으로 살아남은 일곱 마디 스코어에 기반을 둔 ‘ReAwakening of a City’를 창작하였으며, 이 집단은 영국 브라이튼에서 시행된 Futurism Manifesto의 99주년 기념행사에서 첫 데뷔 하였다. 2012-14년 사이에는 영국의 특정 지역과 공연장을 탐방하여 예술가와 내핍 생활, 젠트리피케이션 등에 대해 다루는 무브먼트 오케스트라 ‘The Ballad of Skinny lattes and Vintage Clothing’을 공동 제작하여 공연하기도 하였다. 당시의 기록물은 현재 런던의 Estorick Collection의 영구 소장품으로 남겨져 있다.

‘Handmade / Automation’

A performance utilising a custom-made Sonic Baton enabling the artist to conduct an ‘invisible orchestra of noise’. The sounds come from original field recordings made in ceramic artists’ studios in Seoul, combined with the sounds of an automated ceramic production line in Stoke-on-Trent (UK). The performance is an adaption of a four-channel sound installation made for British Ceramics Biennial 2017 as part of the ‘Made in Korea’ project, co-curated by Young in partnership with ceramist Kay Aplin.

As an artist, Young has exhibited and performed at Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Whitechapel Gallery, Jerwood Hastings, Seoul Museum of Art, Conflux NYC and Berlin MPA. His sound pieces have been published and broadcast by BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, Public Record, Furthernoise, Radio Papesse and Resonance FM. The binaural sound work ‘The Missing Paintings’ is part of the permanent collection at Towner Art Gallery (UK).

In 2007, Young formed Neo Futurist Collective and embarked on the creation of a series of works entitled ‘ReAwakening of a City’, inspired by the surviving seven bars of the score to Awakening of a City by Futurist artist, Luigi Russolo. The collective made its first appearance in Brighton on the 99th anniversary of the Founding of Futurism manifesto. In 2012-14, the collective co-produced ‘The Ballad of Skinny Lattes and Vintage Clothing’, a six movement noise opera about artists, austerity and gentrification, which toured to galleries and site-specific venues across the UK. An edition of which is held in the permanent collection of the Estorick Collection in London.
