\"image\"<\/a> I had a great time playing at Dotolim. I met Sangtae at the Sangsu subway exit and Seungjun met us at the venue a few minutes later. During the sound check, I did my best to figure out their sounds and the capabilities of their rigs so that I would know what material of my own to use when I was playing with them. I was nervous because it was my first time doing a collaboration using my regular solo set up, and I wasn’t sure how well I’d be able to fit in with their styles. I played a duo with Sangtae and then one with Seungjun, and we closed the show with a trio. I think we all agreed that the trio was the best performance of the show. Both of them ended up being very easy to play with (and friendly) and I’m grateful I had the opportunity to meet them and jam with them.<\/p>\n

\"image\"<\/a> Even though this music may not be popular in Korea, this show felt special to me because of the atmosphere that the other musicians and the audience provided. I believe there were people from at least four different countries in the (relatively small) audience, and everybody talked to everybody between sets and after the show, no one just watched and left. (Sangtae and Seungjun both mentioned well before any audience members had shown up that audiences are often mostly foreigners.)  Their focus on playing local concerts and the fact that they kept alluding to a certain camaraderie they felt with other Korean noise musicians who faced the same general disinterest from almost all Koreans made their music feel specifically Korean to me. The way they talked about how they and other Korean noise musicians introduced one another to the music and continued to learn from each other and others (notably from Europe and Japan) gave me the sense that they strongly value both the national and international aspects of their music. In this light, it made a lot of sense to me that the concert was all collaborations. These collaboration sets were not only great opportunities to learn from one another, but also emphasized the fact that the music does not belong to a single person. I was ultimately left with the impression that just as the music these men play could be called Korean or international, it can, on a smaller scale, be seen as each musician’s own music or that of the broader noise community, with their focus on learning and borrowing from others effectively obscuring the line between individual creator and all the music that he or she listens to. In the future, I’d like to see the bonds between these Korean musicians and American ones become stronger so that it will become easier for them to tour here and for us to tour there.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
