이옥경은 현대음악계에서 즉흥연주 및 작곡분야에서 자신만의 색을 갖고 있는 첼로 연주자로 현재 미국 뉴욕에 거주하고 있다. 클래식 음악 교육을 받은 이후 확장된 연주방법으로 재즈, 노이즈, 한국전통음악, 팝음악 등을 흡수하여 자신만의 독특한 음악을 만들고 있다. laurie anderson, lotte anker, derek bailey, john butcher, carla bozulich, nels cline, chris corsano, fred frith, carlos giffoni, vijay iyer, lindha kallerdahl, andrew lampert, min xiao-fen, thurston moore, ikue mori, lawrence D. “butch” morris, jim o’rourke, evan parker, marina rosenfeld, keith rowe, wadada leo smith, c spencer yeh, john zorn 등의 음악가들과 함께 연주하였다. 솔로 음반으로는 Tzadik에서 나온 Nihm과 Ecstatic Peace!에서의 I saw the Ghost of an Unknown Soul and it Said…이 있고 christian marclay와의 듀오 음반, steve beresford 과 peter evans와의 트리오 음반 등이 있다. 현재 Tzadik에서의 솔로 음반과 evan parker, peter evans와의 트리오 음반 그리고 Dancing Wayang을 위한 음반을 phil minton과 함께 준비하고 있다. http://www.okkyunglee.com

나는 상당히 한국적기준으로 “정규적”인 음악교육을 받고 자랐다. 4살때부터 피아노를 배우기시작했고, 7살때 첼로로 악기를 바꿨고, 서울예원, 예고를 다니면서 남들이 다하는대로 하고 자랐다. 그래서 어떻게 보면 당연하게 첼로하기를 상당히 싫어했다. 아무리 생각해봐도 내 주위 친구들중에 음악하는걸 진짜 사랑했던 친구들은 별로 없었다. 상당히 재능있고 잘하는 친구들은 꽤 많았지만 거의다 음악배우는거에대해 지겨워 했던것 같다. 그래서 지원했던 대학교에 불합격했었을때 난 너무 기뻤고 나는 더이상 첼로는 안할거라고 마음먹었었다. 클래식음악에 지긋지긋했던 나는 무언가 새로운걸 공부하겠다고 생각하고 유학을 가기로 결정했다. 아, 진짜 너무나 막연했던 나. 막상 Berklee College of Music을 시작하고 나자 그 무언가 “새로운” 음악이 너무나 광범휘한걸 깨달았고 내가 그때까지 알았던 음악은 너무나도 좁은 정의안에 존재한다는걸 느꼈다. 그상황에서 내가 할수있는거라고는 무조건 다 받아들이고 건질수있는대로 많은 지식들을 흡수하려고 하는것이었다. 또한 이수과정을 위해 나는 내가 유일하게 연주할수있는 악기였던 첼로를 계속해야했다. 맨처음엔 조금만 하다가 관둘거라고 생각했었지만 이번엔 무언가가 아주 달랐다. 더이상 내가 느끼고 들어서 하는연주에 대해 “틀렸다”고 하는 사람이 없었다. 한국에서 받았던 교육과 너무나 달랐고 숨통이 트이는것 같았다. 그후로부터 첼로하는것이 싫지 않았다. 하지만 여전히 첼로가 내인생에 그렇게 큰의미가 있다고 생각하지 않았다. 그러던중 버클리에서 마지막해 나는 연습을 하다가 계속 딴짓을 하기시작했다. 처음엔 그냥 쓸떼없는것을 한다고 생각했지만 계속 그안에서 나만의 무언가를 느꼈다. 더이상 이게 맞는지 틀린지를 떠나 그것이 “나의 진실한 음악”이라고 느꼈다. 내가 그때 친했던 교수님한테 이 얘길를 했을때 그는 내가 “즉흥(improvisation)”을 하고있는거라고 했다. 그때까지 재즈에서만 즉흥을 한다고 생각했었던 나는 이해를 못했었다. 하지만 그렇게 아무것도 모르고 시작했던 “즉흥”, 더 정확하게 말하자면 “자유 즉흥(free improvisation)”을 이제 나는 내모든걸 걸고 10년이 넘게 하고 있다. 아마도 3살때부터 시작한 음악생활에서 이것만큼 내자신을 음악을 통해 이렇게 솔직하게 느껴본적이 없었기때문일것이다. 그것이 음악을 하는 가장 중요한 이유가 아닐까? A native of Korea, Okkyung Lee has been developing her own voice in a contemporary cello performance, improvisation and composition for more than a decade. Without being bound to any specific genre or style, her unique blend of music is drawn out of classical, jazz, sounds, Korean traditional and pop music, noise with extended techniques.Based in New York since 2000, Okkyung has released several albums both in the States and Europe: two album as a leader, “Nihm” and “Noisy Love Songs (for George Dyer)”, both on Tzadik; duo album “Anicca” with legendary English vocalist Phil Minton for Dancing Wayang; “The Bleeding Edge” with saxophonist Evan Parker and trumpeter Peter Evans on Psi; solo cello album “I Saw The Ghost Of An Unknown Soul And It Said…” on Ecstatic Peace!; duo recording with turntablist Christian Marclay, “Rubbings” on My Cat Is An Alien (LP)/A Silnet Place (CD).In addition to giving solo concerts and collaborative concerts, currently she is involved with many exciting groups, most notably with Vijay Iyer and Mike Ladd’s politically charged “Holding it Down”, trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith’s “Organic”, “6ix”, a collective large ensemble with Urs Leimgruber, Jacques Demierre, Dorothea Schürch, Thomas Lehn and Roger Turner, and a collective trio with trumpeter Axel Dörner and pianist Achim Kaufmann. Also she has worked with many visual artists and choreographers developing multi-disciplinary performances that were presented at Dance Theater Workshop, Issue Project Room and The Kitchen.Her versatility as a cellist has led Okkyung to work with numerous artists from many different facets of music such as Laurie Anderson, David Berhman, John Butcher, Nels Cline, Chris Corsano, John Edwards, Fred Frith, Carlos Giffoni, John Hollenbeck, Paul Lytton, Thurston Moore, Ikue Mori, Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris, Marina Rosenfeld, Jim o’Rourke, Tyshawn Sorey, Craig Taborn, John Tilbury, C Spencer Yeh and John Zorn to name a few.She has received a composer commission from New York State Council On The Arts in 2007 and Foundation For Contemporary Arts Grant in 2010.Okkyung holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Film Scoring/Contemporary Writing & Production from Berklee College Of Music, and master’s degree in Contemporary Improvisation from New England Conservatory Of Music. http://www.okkyunglee.com
