It was a rainy day and I went through Hongdae, my old neighborhood, to Jin Sangtae’s new space, Dotolim. I knew the space was small, but it was even smaller than I’d expected. Seeing Sangtae and his wife made me feel much more comfortable, and I set up and waited for Hankil and the audience.
The small room got filled up. Pretty soon I started playing a solo.
I don’t do many solos, not because I don’t like to–well, maybe partly because of that. I was excited and uncharacteristically nervous. The room wasn’t dark, and the nearest member of the audience was as close to my equipment as I was, basically sitting across the table from me.
I’m used to falling into concentration very easily and naturally, maybe just by habit, and "forgetting myself," but this didn’t happen on its own at Dotolim. I was very conscious of the proximity of the audience, the curious eyes of people I didn’t know, and the attention of a few close friends sitting to my left. I was also aware of the vacuum of playing alone–I don’t feel this way playing at home or playing with others. So my playing, at least at first, was more intentional and conscious than usual. I consciously worked into a territory of alternation and intermingling of very prosaic electronic tones and much richer acoustic ones, hoping that path would lead me to the focus I expect and prefer.
At times, it worked and I was in my music, I was my music, but never for long. Something kept reminding me of my physical existence in this small, warm space.  How can such a small group of people in such a tiny room be more intimidating than a big crowd in a large venue? It is challenging and beautiful.
After a short break came the set I was looking forward to: a duo with Ryu Hankil. Hankil is one of my favorite musicians and people, and I knew I could feel comfortable playing with him no matter how hard he pushed me into new musical territory. The duo set was very curious and complex. I felt like we were anticipating each other’s moves and resisting our first response impulses in favor of delayed and broken interactions. It was actually a little like how Bonnie Jones and I interacted last summer on tour in Japan: we could digress and subvert each other, we could break the communication because we trusted each other to wind up somewhere interesting.
We are fortunate to have a new space for this music in Seoul. It feels good to play there.
